The Jean Kuntzmann Prize, announced on the opening day of LabEx PERSYVAL and the centennial commemoration of Jean Kuntzmann, has its first recipient. Emmanuel Candès, a professor at Stanford and holder of the Barnum-Simons Chair in Mathematics and Statistics, has done us the honor of accepting this award.

The awards ceremony will take place on Monday, June 16, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Musée de Grenoble

Several conferences

During his visit to Grenoble to receive his award, and in addition to his lecture titled "Contemporary Scientific Challenges in the World of Big Data" on June 16 in the museum auditorium, Emmanuel Candès will give a series of lectures titled "Some Recent Uses of Convex Programming in Data Sciences." 

Three sessions are scheduled: Monday, June 16; Wednesday, June 18, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.; and Tuesday, June 17, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., in Room 1 of the Irma Tower at the LJK.

Emmanuel Candès is also one of the speakers at the Lyon-Grenoble Statisticians' Day (GLyS) on June 19.

About the Jean Kuntzmann Prize

Established in honor of Professor Jean Kuntzmann, a pioneer in the digital sciences who had a profound impact on the development of applied mathematics and computer science, this award recognizes exceptional researchers or faculty members whose work, drawing on mathematics and computer science, transcends disciplinary and thematic boundaries and demonstrates a keen awareness of practical and societal implications.

Biography

Emmanuel Candès, a graduate of École Polytechnique, earned a Ph.D. from Stanford University under the supervision of David Donoho. His research focused on curvelets and ridgelets, a generalization of wavelets that is particularly well-suited to wave propagation and image processing. 

Later, in collaboration with Terence Tao and Justin Romberg, he laid the groundwork for compressed sensing, a method that enables the reconstruction of sparse signals using fewer data points than the Nyquist-Shannon criterion requires. This result had a profound impact on the signal processing community and its applications. His work garnered widespread acclaim and earned him numerous awards.

As an expert in harmonic analysis, signal processing, statistics, optimization, scientific computing, inverse problems, image analysis, and information theory, the topics addressed by Emmanuel Candès are sure to resonate deeply within our community. From this perspective, he represents for us a laureate who perfectly embodies the Kuntzmann spirit, and we are delighted that he has agreed to accept this award and to spend a week (the week of June 16) in Grenoble to build connections with us: we hope we will be able to make the most of this opportunity and that his visit will be a success!
