Description of the introductory internship
As part of its educational program, LabEx PERSYVAL welcomed eighth-grade students for the first time in 2016 for an introductory internship. These future high school students spent a week in our university setting to learn about research-related careers and the innovation process that leads to industrial applications.
This program has been held every year since then. Throughout the week, a small group of up to 10 students meets with researchers in mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science, automation, signal processing, and other fields in their respective labs. The researchers present their work—often in an engaging way—helping the students gain a firsthand understanding of the practical benefits and career opportunities for the world of tomorrow.
As a central theme for this week, the students are also working on a prototyping project at the MASTIC Fablab. To understand how to bring an idea to life, they are asked to design a connected device, specify its features, and build it using the equipment available at the Fablab. The result of their work is an object that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. This device, connected to the home network, can, for example, send an email or text message when it detects someone in their room... Each student takes home their own personal device.
