Hosting middle school students for introductory internships

This internship is organized every year during the week preceding the February school holidays. For the 2026-2027 school year, it will take place from Monday, February 8 to Friday, February 12, 2027.

This year, priority will be given to the middle schools in Saint-Martin-d'Hères and Gières, as well as to girls.

Description of the discovery internship

As part of its education initiative, in 2016 the LabEx PERSYVAL welcomed ninth-grade middle school students for the first time for their discovery internships. These future high school students spent a week in our university environment to learn about research-related careers and the innovation process that leads to industrial applications.

This experience has been repeated every year since. Throughout the week, a small group of up to 10 students meets researchers in mathematics, applied mathematics, computer science, control engineering, signal processing, and other fields in their respective labs. The researchers present their work, often in an engaging way, giving students a firsthand look at the benefits and practical applications for tomorrow's world.

As a central thread of the week, the students also carry out a prototyping project within the MASTIC Fablab. To understand how to bring an idea to life, they are asked to design a connected object, define its specifications, and build it using the equipment available at the Fablab. The result of their work is both aesthetic and functional. For instance, this connected object can send an email or a text message when presence is detected in their bedroom... Each student leaves with their own personal object.
