Event-Based Control, Circuits, and Processing for Ultra-Low Power Consumption

Action Team

This team's goal is to achieve ultra-low power consumption in electronic circuits. To this end, we propose to study non-uniform, event-driven sensors and actuators, as well as energy-efficient signal processing in these systems.

Project Summary

One of the objectives is to develop a low-power vision sensor. Such an electronic circuit will be designed at the start of the project. The second topic concerns the optimal control of systems equipped with converters. The focus is on studying non-smooth dynamic systems. For nonlinear control systems, the possibility of updating control inputs only when certain events occur will also be investigated. Thus, the observation and control of event-based dynamic systems will also be studied. These events may originate from a state function or from the measured output alone. Finally, two demonstrators will be built to illustrate and integrate all the results obtained in the project. For all research areas, optimization objectives will be addressed, such as minimizing the number of level crossings required to recover a signal within a given signal class.

The applications we are considering are ultra-low-power embedded systems. More specifically, these applications involve event-driven architectures as microelectronic components. Practical applications include medical devices and minimizing power consumption in networked systems. Applications of event-triggered control for nonlinear systems, or for non-smooth systems, include the control of biomimetic robots (such as micro-flying artificial insects) and mechanical systems with first- or second-order constraints (such as the control of dynamic objects with shocks and constraints on state variables).

This team is supported by the Modeling and Simulation of the Physical World (SIM) and Pervasive Computing Systems (PCS) research areas at PERSYVAL-Lab.

  • Abstract: This thesis is part of the E-BaCCuSS (Event-Based Control, Circuits and Processing towards Ultra-Low Power Consumption) action team, which has recently been designated as part of the PERSYVAL-Lab Center of Excellence. This action team brings together five laboratories (CEA-LETI, Gipsa-lab, INRIA, LJK, TIMA) and is therefore highly multidisciplinary in nature. The proposed work builds on previous research between the LJK and TIMA laboratories on signal processing for asynchronous systems with non-uniform sampling, and between the Gipsa-lab and TIMA laboratories on robust power consumption control systems. This work has led to the discovery and hardware implementation of efficient, low-power algorithms, though using standard sampling thresholds. The goal of this thesis is to optimize these algorithms by using thresholds constructed dynamically based on the application and signals, and by improving processing or control techniques. Applications to embedded systems are planned within the E-BaCCuSS project, particularly for medical devices. The mathematical justification of the algorithms’ performance is also a key challenge to ensure their adoption by industry. It will be the focus of particular attention within the thesis.
