The “Digital Technology and Sustainability” (ICT-S) research area aims to develop alternatives to current IT systems that are consistent with mitigation and adaptation strategies designed to address the ongoing ecological upheavals.
The development of Green IT (eco-design) and IT for Green is not enough to set our societies on a democratically determined path that would lead to respecting planetary boundaries in a spirit of social and environmental justice. Furthermore, there is a lack of research in computer science that integrates with strategies for demand reduction, resource-efficient practices, ecological reorientation, and resilience in the face of recurring shortages of resources and electronic components, etc. The ICT-S initiative aims to foster such research around themes such as:
- Computing within limits
- Digital Technology and Degrowth, The Decline of Digital Technology
- Digital Resilience vs. Societal Resilience
- Digital addiction, digital detachment
- Interactions between Digital Technology, the Environment, and Society
Such work requires a systemic, interdisciplinary, and reflective approach that takes into account the complexity of science-society relations with regard to the selection of research questions, stakeholder engagement with the research, the consequences of using the results, and so on. A major objective of the ICT-S research area is therefore to forge links between computer scientists and other disciplinary communities involved in ecological issues (sociology, philosophy, economics, geography, political science, life and earth sciences, etc.) to jointly address the challenges posed by the ecological emergency.
