Remote creativity through robotic telepresence

Exploratory project

Abstract

CYPASS aims to evaluate the outcomes of creating an environment for collaborative creativity involving remote human agents and physical objects enhanced by interactive modalities.

Results

We have equipped the MICAL platform with a head-mounted display ( HMD) that supports eye tracking. New software was developed to integrate this new hardware with the platform’s non-autonomous robot, enabling a remote immersive teleoperation interaction loop. A scenario in which a human operator wearing the HMD interacts with two human partners to reassemble a puzzle was studied and evaluated.

The project highlighted the importance of eye contact in social interaction. It also demonstrated that a remote control system can replace a human operator when the system replicates the appropriate interaction patterns within the context of a realistic professional collaboration task. The work carried out as part of this project has inspired the H2020 SPARK project on spatial augmented reality for collaborative creativity, and is linked to the ARC6 TENSIVE collaborative project with AWABOT & HUMANOO on the immersive teleoperation of telepresence robots.
