Human-Machine Interaction: New Challenges / PERSYVAL-Minalogic Breakfast Meetings

Ever since computers were invented, the question of user interfaces has been a concern. Over the past fifty years, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) has made computing both practical and effective in many professional settings, while also making it accessible to a wider audience.

HCI is the field dedicated to the design, implementation, and evaluation of interactive computer systems intended for human users, as well as to the study of the key phenomena underlying human-computer interaction. An interactive system must be adapted to the perceptual, motor, and cognitive abilities of its users: the usability of a system thus relates to human capabilities. As such, HCI occupies a unique intersection between computer science and the humanities and social sciences.

The goal of this meeting is to provide insights for better understanding the various facets of this field and to relate them to specific application needs, as well as to introduce recent advances in Human-Computer Interaction. We will explore two complementary aspects of advancements in HMI: the challenges of HMI in the specific context of Augmented Reality and the challenges of a new mode of interaction, Brain-Computer Interfaces.

      The rapid rise of Augmented Reality for value-added uses and applications in B2B and B2C contexts can be attributed to technological advances in devices (such as tablets and headsets) but especially in development tools. Three principles govern Augmented Reality (AR):
      1) AR combines real and virtual objects in a real environment
      2) AR operates interactively and in real time
      3) AR aligns real and virtual objects with one another.
      In research, AR systems pose challenges for camera position estimation systems (e.g., computer vision algorithms) as well as for display devices and rendering techniques (e.g., multi-depth display and realistic illumination of digital objects). These two challenges aim to achieve the most realistic augmented view possible within the user’s field of view.
      Another challenge for the effective use of AR beyond the “wow factor” of a gadget lies in interaction within the AR context. In this presentation, we consider AR interaction on mobile devices, as these devices constitute the primary AR visualization interface today. The device is used as a magic lens that “augments” the perception of the physical environment with digital content. We focus on the spatial relationships between the content displayed on the screen and the physical environment: The question then is, how can we relax these spatial constraints to improve interaction without breaking the physical-digital co-location?

      Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) allow humans to communicate with electronic devices without using muscle movements, but directly through the interpretation of brain signals. They are now gaining increasing prominence in the media, supported by transhumanist movements, which argue that BCI technology will enhance human capabilities, enabling us to survive in the face of the growing power of artificial intelligence. However, BCIs were initially developed to address communication difficulties in people with severe motor disorders, and they remain very limited in terms of the amount of information they can transmit. In this presentation, we will examine the limitations of current BCIs and their future prospects. We will also highlight the fundamental role of signal processing in this technology.

Gaining a Better Understanding of R&D Challenges

LabEx PERSYVAL and Minalogic are launching a series of regular meetings between academics and industry professionals on topics with significant societal impact within PERSYVAL-Lab’s area of expertise. The chosen format is a series of breakfast meetings on the Saint-Martin-d'Hères campus, scheduled for Tuesday mornings, featuring accessible presentations by experts on the selected topic, followed by a time for exchange and discussion.

The purpose of these meetings is to:

  • learn about the challenges and advancements in research within a sector at the forefront of current events
  • understand the potential for innovative application development
  • discuss R&D projects with experts in the field
